Car Diagnostics FAQs – Hereford Service and MOT Centre

Frequently Asked Questions About Vehicle Diagnostics

Modern vehicles contain numerous electronic control systems. When a warning light appears or your vehicle develops a fault, diagnostic equipment can help identify where further investigation may be required.

What is car diagnostics?

Car diagnostics involves connecting specialist equipment to a vehicle to communicate with its electronic control systems.

The equipment can retrieve stored fault codes and other information that can help a technician investigate a vehicle problem.

A diagnostic code isn’t always a complete diagnosis, so further testing may be needed to identify the underlying fault.

When should I have my car diagnosed?

A diagnostic check may be useful if:

  • Your engine warning light has appeared
  • Your car has gone into limp mode
  • The vehicle is running poorly
  • You’ve noticed a loss of power
  • The car is difficult to start
  • A dashboard warning light has appeared
  • Fuel consumption has changed
  • An electrical system isn’t working correctly
  • Your vehicle has developed an unexplained fault

Can you diagnose an engine warning light?

Yes. Diagnostic equipment can be used to retrieve relevant fault information from many vehicles.

Once the information has been obtained, further checks may be required to determine exactly what is causing the warning light.

Does a diagnostic scan tell me exactly what’s wrong?

Not necessarily.

A diagnostic scan can provide valuable information, but a fault code doesn’t always mean that the component named in the code is itself faulty.

Proper diagnosis can involve checking wiring, sensors, mechanical components, live data and other systems.

Can you diagnose diesel cars?

Yes, subject to vehicle compatibility and the diagnostic services available at the centre.

Contact us with your registration number and details of the problem.

Can you diagnose petrol cars?

Yes. Diagnostic equipment can be used on many petrol vehicles to investigate engine and electronic faults.

Can diagnostics identify ABS faults?

Diagnostic equipment can often communicate with a vehicle’s ABS system and retrieve relevant fault information.

Further testing may be necessary to establish the cause of the fault.

Can diagnostics identify airbag faults?

Many vehicles store electronic fault information relating to their airbag and restraint systems.

If your airbag or SRS warning light has appeared, it should be investigated because these systems are important safety features.

Can diagnostics find gearbox problems?

Diagnostics can provide useful information when investigating certain automatic and electronically controlled gearbox problems.

However, gearbox faults can be electronic, mechanical or a combination of both, so further investigation may be required.

Can you clear my engine warning light?

A warning light may be cleared after the underlying problem has been properly investigated and, where necessary, repaired.

Simply clearing a warning light without addressing the cause isn’t a reliable solution, and the warning may return.

How long does vehicle diagnostics take?

It depends on the problem.

A straightforward diagnostic scan may be relatively quick, while an intermittent or complex fault can require considerably more investigation.

Can diagnostics find intermittent faults?

Intermittent faults can be particularly difficult to diagnose because the problem may not occur while the vehicle is being inspected.

Diagnostic information, fault history, live data and additional testing can sometimes help identify the cause.

How much does car diagnostics cost?

The price depends on the vehicle and the level of diagnostic investigation required.

Contact us with your registration number and details of the fault so we can advise you about the appropriate diagnostic service.

Do you provide diagnostics in Hereford?

Engine Warning Light On?

Don’t ignore a warning light simply because your car still appears to drive normally.

We have used Hereford Service and MOT Centre for more than 20 years, and throughout that time the service we have received has been second to none. They currently look after all three of our Bubble Production commercial vehicles, as well as three cars, so keeping our vehicles reliable and on the road is incredibly important to us. Bert, and now Kim, have always been faultless in their knowledge, professionalism and the way they look after us. They understand that downtime for any of our commercial vehicles can be extremely costly, so if something needs doing, they make sure it is dealt with as quickly and efficiently as possible. Just as importantly, they always keep us fully informed about any problems they find, what needs to be done and what the likely costs will be. There are never any unwanted surprises. After more than two decades of dealing with them, that level of trust means a great deal. We rely on Hereford Service and MOT Centre 100% and genuinely wouldn't trust anyone else with our vehicles. Highly recommended.

I had an extremely disappointing experience with this mechanic. I took my vehicle to him after experiencing problems and left it with him for diagnosis. I was told the issue was a blocked electric water pump and believed the problem had been repaired. I paid the amount charged (£385.50) and collected the vehicle. However, after driving it, the same issues continued — the vehicle was still jerking and the engine was cutting in and out. I returned the vehicle, and after a test drive I was told that everything was fine. Unfortunately, the problem continued, so I brought it back again. At this point, he claimed that he had never actually fixed the fault and had only checked the issue, despite having charged us for the work. When we showed him the invoices and explained that we had paid expecting the problem to be repaired, he repeatedly denied responsibility and refused to acknowledge the situation. The way we were treated was extremely unprofessional. He was rude, dismissive, and even threatened to call the police when we questioned the charges. The staff were also aggressive and unhelpful, making the whole experience even worse. Not only did we lose money paying for work that did not resolve the issue, but it felt as though the vehicle came back in an even worse condition than before. The stress, wasted time, and financial loss caused by this experience have been extremely frustrating. I would strongly advise others to be very cautious and avoid using this mechanic. Based on my experience, I found the service to be unprofessional, unreliable, and disappointing.
