Car Service FAQs – Hereford Service and MOT Centre
Frequently Asked Questions About Car Servicing
Regular servicing is an important part of maintaining your vehicle. At Hereford Service and MOT Centre, we can help you keep your vehicle maintained and identify potential problems before they become more serious.
Why does my car need a service?
A service gives your vehicle a more comprehensive maintenance check than an MOT.
Regular servicing can help identify wear, leaks, fluid issues and developing mechanical problems while also helping to keep important components operating correctly.
How often should I service my car?
The recommended service interval depends on the vehicle, its age, mileage and manufacturer recommendations.
Your vehicle handbook will normally provide the recommended servicing schedule. If you’re unsure when your next service is due, we can advise you based on your vehicle’s details.
What’s included in a car service?
The exact checks depend on the type of service and the vehicle.
Depending on the service, checks and maintenance may include:
- Engine oil and oil filter
- Fluid levels
- Brakes
- Tyres
- Lights
- Steering
- Suspension
- Battery
- Filters
- Belts and other components
- General vehicle condition
We’ll explain what is included when you book.
What’s the difference between an interim and full service?
An interim service is generally a more routine maintenance check, while a full service provides a more comprehensive set of checks and maintenance items.
The appropriate service depends on your vehicle and its manufacturer’s recommendations.
Do I need a service if my car has passed its MOT?
Yes.
An MOT and service perform different functions.
An MOT checks whether your vehicle meets the required legal safety and environmental standards at the time of testing. A service is intended to maintain the vehicle and identify potential problems.
Your car can pass its MOT and still be due a service.
Can you service diesel cars?
Yes, subject to the vehicles and services we currently support.
If you have a diesel car that needs a service, contact us with your registration number and we’ll discuss the appropriate service for your vehicle.
Can you service petrol cars?
Yes. We service eligible petrol vehicles and can advise on the appropriate maintenance based on your vehicle’s requirements.
Can you service hybrid cars?
Hybrid vehicles have specific servicing and safety requirements.
If you own a hybrid vehicle, contact us with your registration number so we can confirm what servicing work we can provide.
Can you service electric cars?
Electric vehicles have different maintenance requirements from conventional petrol and diesel vehicles.
If you have an electric vehicle, contact us with your vehicle details and we’ll confirm which services we can provide.
Can you service an older or high-mileage car?
Yes. Older and higher-mileage vehicles can benefit from regular maintenance.
If your vehicle has developed a number of problems or you’re concerned about its reliability, we can inspect it and discuss what work may be appropriate.
Can you service my car before its MOT?
Yes. Having your vehicle serviced before its MOT can be useful if you’re concerned about its condition.
A service may identify problems that could potentially affect your MOT result, although a service is not a guarantee that a vehicle will pass its MOT.
Can you carry out repairs during a service?
If we identify a problem during servicing, we’ll explain what we’ve found and discuss any recommended repairs with you.
We won’t simply carry out additional work without discussing it with you.
Will you reset my service light?
Where appropriate, we can reset the service indicator following servicing.
The procedure varies depending on the vehicle.
How long does a car service take?
The time required depends on the vehicle and the type of service being carried out.
We’ll give you an indication of the expected time when you make your booking.
How much does a car service cost?
The cost depends on your vehicle and the type of service required.
Contact Hereford Service and MOT Centre with your registration number and we’ll be able to discuss your servicing requirements and provide information about pricing.

We have used Hereford Service and MOT Centre for more than 20 years, and throughout that time the service we have received has been second to none. They currently look after all three of our Bubble Production commercial vehicles, as well as three cars, so keeping our vehicles reliable and on the road is incredibly important to us. Bert, and now Kim, have always been faultless in their knowledge, professionalism and the way they look after us. They understand that downtime for any of our commercial vehicles can be extremely costly, so if something needs doing, they make sure it is dealt with as quickly and efficiently as possible. Just as importantly, they always keep us fully informed about any problems they find, what needs to be done and what the likely costs will be. There are never any unwanted surprises. After more than two decades of dealing with them, that level of trust means a great deal. We rely on Hereford Service and MOT Centre 100% and genuinely wouldn't trust anyone else with our vehicles. Highly recommended.Posted on Google![]()

I had an extremely disappointing experience with this mechanic. I took my vehicle to him after experiencing problems and left it with him for diagnosis. I was told the issue was a blocked electric water pump and believed the problem had been repaired. I paid the amount charged (£385.50) and collected the vehicle. However, after driving it, the same issues continued — the vehicle was still jerking and the engine was cutting in and out. I returned the vehicle, and after a test drive I was told that everything was fine. Unfortunately, the problem continued, so I brought it back again. At this point, he claimed that he had never actually fixed the fault and had only checked the issue, despite having charged us for the work. When we showed him the invoices and explained that we had paid expecting the problem to be repaired, he repeatedly denied responsibility and refused to acknowledge the situation. The way we were treated was extremely unprofessional. He was rude, dismissive, and even threatened to call the police when we questioned the charges. The staff were also aggressive and unhelpful, making the whole experience even worse. Not only did we lose money paying for work that did not resolve the issue, but it felt as though the vehicle came back in an even worse condition than before. The stress, wasted time, and financial loss caused by this experience have been extremely frustrating. I would strongly advise others to be very cautious and avoid using this mechanic. Based on my experience, I found the service to be unprofessional, unreliable, and disappointing.Posted on Google![]()
