MOT FAQs – Hereford Service and MOT Centre
Frequently Asked Questions About MOTs
If your MOT is due, Hereford Service and MOT Centre can help with your annual MOT test and any issues that may need attention.
Below are answers to some of the questions customers commonly ask about MOT testing.
What is an MOT?
An MOT is an annual test that checks whether a vehicle meets the required safety and environmental standards at the time of the test.
The test examines various parts of your vehicle, including the brakes, tyres, lights, steering, suspension, seat belts, exhaust and emissions, windscreen, wipers and other relevant components.
An MOT is different from a service. An MOT is a test of roadworthiness and environmental standards, while a service is designed to maintain your vehicle and identify developing mechanical problems.
When does my car need an MOT?
Most cars and other applicable vehicles need their first MOT when they are three years old, and then an MOT is generally required every year.
You can check your vehicle’s MOT history and expiry date using the official government service.
Can I drive without an MOT?
You generally cannot drive a vehicle on a public road without a valid MOT, except in certain circumstances permitted by law, such as travelling to a pre-booked MOT test.
If you’re unsure whether your MOT has expired, check before driving the vehicle.
How long does an MOT take?
The MOT test itself normally takes around 45 minutes to an hour, although the amount of time your vehicle is at the garage may be longer depending on bookings, workload and whether additional work is required.
What does an MOT test check?
An MOT checks a range of safety and environmental items, including:
- Brakes
- Tyres and wheels
- Lights
- Steering
- Suspension
- Seat belts
- Windscreen and wipers
- Exhaust and emissions
- Vehicle structure and bodywork
- Doors
- Number plates
- Other relevant safety components
What happens if my car fails its MOT?
If your vehicle fails, the MOT tester will provide details of the defects identified during the test.
Some faults may need to be repaired before the vehicle can legally pass the test. We’ll explain what has been identified and, where applicable, discuss the repair options with you.
Can you repair my car if it fails its MOT?
If your vehicle fails because of a fault that we can repair, we can discuss the required work with you.
We’ll explain what needs attention and the available repair options before carrying out additional work.
Can I get my MOT and service done together?
Yes. Combining your MOT with a service can be a convenient way of keeping up with your vehicle’s annual maintenance.
An MOT and service are different, so having both carried out can give you a more complete picture of your vehicle’s condition.
How early can I book my MOT?
You don’t have to wait until the day your MOT expires to arrange your next test.
Booking in advance can help you find a convenient appointment and avoid leaving your MOT until the last minute.
Will my MOT check the condition of my engine?
An MOT is not a full mechanical inspection of your engine.
The test focuses on specific items required by the MOT testing standards. If you’re concerned about your engine, a service or diagnostic check may be more appropriate.
Does passing an MOT mean my car is mechanically perfect?
No.
An MOT confirms that your vehicle meets the required test standards at the time of the test. It doesn’t guarantee that every mechanical component is in perfect condition or that the vehicle won’t develop a fault afterwards.
Regular servicing is still important.
Do you MOT diesel and petrol cars?

We have used Hereford Service and MOT Centre for more than 20 years, and throughout that time the service we have received has been second to none. They currently look after all three of our Bubble Production commercial vehicles, as well as three cars, so keeping our vehicles reliable and on the road is incredibly important to us. Bert, and now Kim, have always been faultless in their knowledge, professionalism and the way they look after us. They understand that downtime for any of our commercial vehicles can be extremely costly, so if something needs doing, they make sure it is dealt with as quickly and efficiently as possible. Just as importantly, they always keep us fully informed about any problems they find, what needs to be done and what the likely costs will be. There are never any unwanted surprises. After more than two decades of dealing with them, that level of trust means a great deal. We rely on Hereford Service and MOT Centre 100% and genuinely wouldn't trust anyone else with our vehicles. Highly recommended.Posted on Google![]()

I had an extremely disappointing experience with this mechanic. I took my vehicle to him after experiencing problems and left it with him for diagnosis. I was told the issue was a blocked electric water pump and believed the problem had been repaired. I paid the amount charged (£385.50) and collected the vehicle. However, after driving it, the same issues continued — the vehicle was still jerking and the engine was cutting in and out. I returned the vehicle, and after a test drive I was told that everything was fine. Unfortunately, the problem continued, so I brought it back again. At this point, he claimed that he had never actually fixed the fault and had only checked the issue, despite having charged us for the work. When we showed him the invoices and explained that we had paid expecting the problem to be repaired, he repeatedly denied responsibility and refused to acknowledge the situation. The way we were treated was extremely unprofessional. He was rude, dismissive, and even threatened to call the police when we questioned the charges. The staff were also aggressive and unhelpful, making the whole experience even worse. Not only did we lose money paying for work that did not resolve the issue, but it felt as though the vehicle came back in an even worse condition than before. The stress, wasted time, and financial loss caused by this experience have been extremely frustrating. I would strongly advise others to be very cautious and avoid using this mechanic. Based on my experience, I found the service to be unprofessional, unreliable, and disappointing.Posted on Google![]()
